The snowbelt States have seen an alarming increase in Snowmobile related fatalities over the past season. For example, officials in the State of Michigan report a 40% increase in snowmobiling fatalities during the ‘22-’23 season. While most snowmobilers wear helmets, officials warn that the major contributing factors in snowmobile fatalities are speed and alcohol.
According to the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, there have been 79 snowmobile accidents and 19 deaths since April 1, 2021.
Wearing protective gear such as helmets, boots, gloves, and eye protection; following speed limits; avoiding alcohol or drugs; and staying on marked trails will greatly improve the safety of snowmobilers.

You can learn to ride safe! There are many organizations which offer e-courses and hands-on training to help improve your awareness, and skill. Check with your State Natural Resource office for rules, regulations and safety guidelines.
